I walk the basement, look for signs of water and talk through which floor suits it.
Request an estimateHow do you put a floor down in a basement in El Paso?
Basement flooring in El Paso, TX, means putting a finished floor over the bare concrete slab, and that floor only lasts if the slab under it is dry enough to carry it, so we test before anything goes down.
Most people call us about one of two basements. Either it's bare concrete they finally want to use, or it's a floor that's already lifting, smelling musty or showing a stain that keeps coming back. The price turns on the size of the room, the floor you pick and what the slab needs before it's ready, like old coating or glue to take off or dampness to fix. The schedule turns mostly on whether the slab passes its moisture test or needs work first. I'll give you your own number once I've seen the slab.
How we handle basement flooring, from the slab up
In a basement the floor is the easy part and the water is the hard part, so that's where we start. We look for the signs, like a white crust on the concrete, dark edges along the walls or a musty smell. Then we test the slab in the spots where the new floor will actually go, not just one handy corner. If it's damp, we work out where the water is coming from before we talk about flooring, because covering a moisture problem usually makes the air worse and can do real damage, and stopping or controlling the source is almost always the fix that works. Once the slab is ready, our crew preps the surface and lays the floor.
A lot of basement slabs carry old paint, sealer or carpet glue that has to come off first, and that's what concrete grinding and surface preparation is for, since a new floor only holds as well as the surface under it. If you'd rather keep the basement as plain concrete, concrete sealing is the lighter option, and we'll tell you at the estimate whether your slab is a good fit for it.
Basement flooring permits and flood maps in El Paso
The City of El Paso requires a building permit to build, enlarge, alter, repair, move or tear down a building or structure, and El Paso's One Stop Shop is where those permits are taken. Laying a basement floor isn't named on its own in that list, so whether your job needs a permit is the city's call, and we check with the office that covers your address before we start. If it does need one, we handle the paperwork, or we walk you through it if you're filing as the owner. While you're on the city's site, search its flood zone maps, including the preliminary ones, because it's a quick way to see whether your address sits in a flood zone before you put money into a floor below ground.
Most basements we're called to here have been bare for years or were finished once and let go, and the cause is usually water from a storm, a plumbing leak or plain dampness coming through the concrete. We test and fix things the same way on jobs in Socorro and across the state line in Sunland Park.
Why call us for basement floors
I look at your slab myself
I come out to look at the floor and write the estimate, whether you're in El Paso or one of the cities around it in Texas or New Mexico. The person pricing your job is the one who saw the slab, so the number fits what's really there.
Our own crew, prep checked
Our own crew does the work, and I'm on the job to check the prep before anything goes down. That's the part nobody sees once the floor is in, and it's where most failed floors start.
Working on tricky slabs since 2017
I started this business in 2017, and damp basements and old coatings nobody can name are the jobs we're known for. When a slab has a strange history, I'd rather take extra time figuring it out than guess and hope.

Frequently asked questions
Does my basement slab need a moisture test before new flooring?
Yes. Flooring makers generally require a moisture test before their product goes over concrete, and the wood flooring trade group calls testing compulsory in every case. A test only shows the slab at the time it's run and at the spots tested, so ask any installer, us included, when and where they plan to test.
What happens if my basement floor tests wet?
Any active leak or moisture still reaching the surface gets corrected first, and then the slab is tested again. After that, one university flooring spec uses an adhesive rated for that moisture level and accepted by the flooring maker, or a repair coating over the whole suspect area when there's no such adhesive. That coating is an extra step, so it shows up on the estimate when your slab needs it.
How much does basement flooring cost in El Paso?
Installing hardwood, vinyl plank, tile or carpet in El Paso usually runs about $1,500 to $8,000 per job, which is the going rate in the area, not a quote from us. Your number depends on the slab work as much as the floor you pick, and I'll price both when I come out.
Can I put carpet in a basement in El Paso?
You can, as long as the basement stays dry, because mold and mildew can grow in damp carpet. If yours has a history of leaks, get that sorted before you settle on carpet.
How do I get a basement ready for a hardwood floor?
Start by making sure there's no known moisture problem, because the wood flooring trade group says wood goes in only where nothing could harm the floor, the house or the people in it. The same group advises running heating, cooling or a dehumidifier to hold the conditions the wood needs for at least 5 days before it's delivered, so build that time into your schedule.
What causes a basement floor to peel or come loose?
Too much moisture in the slab is the usual cause, and it can make a floor come loose, push up into ridges, break down or grow microbes underneath. That's why the test comes before the floor, since dampness you can't see from the surface is what does the damage later.
Other work basements often need
Concrete Grinding & Surface Preparation
If your basement slab still carries old paint, glue or a sealer nobody can name, grinding takes it back to clean concrete so the next floor has something to grip.
Concrete Sealing
When you'd rather keep the basement as bare concrete, a sealer cuts down on dust and makes spills easier to wipe up, without the cost of a full floor.
