Is stained concrete right for my floor?

Stained concrete flooring in El Paso gives you color that soaks into the slab through a chemical reaction. You end up with a mottled, sealed floor that keeps the character of your concrete instead of covering it up.

Most calls start with a plain gray slab in a living area, a patio room or a shop, and an owner who wants color without burying the concrete under a coating. The price mostly follows the square footage and how much stands between us and bare concrete, since old sealer, paint or glue has to come off first, and cracks or patches add work too. The schedule turns on the slab, because a new pour should cure a full 28 days before it's stained and a stripped floor has to be clean before any color goes on. When I come out, I'll look at your floor and give you your own figure.

How we do a stained concrete floor

Stain works with the concrete you have, flaws and all, so the first thing I do is tell you what it won't cover. Then I look for signs of moisture building up under the slab, because a floor that stays damp from below needs sorting out before any finish goes on. Our crew strips old sealer, paint or glue and cleans the slab down to bare concrete, and then we do test patches on your floor to pick colors and match the sealer to how deep you want the color to look. Once you've picked, we apply the stain, let it react, clean off the residue and let the surface dry fully before it gets sealed.

Some floors are better served by something else, and I'd rather say so at the estimate. If your concrete is too patched for stain to look right and you still want a decorative floor, terrazzo flooring sets stone or glass chips into a new surface, so the old slab's flaws don't show. Below grade, damp slabs are common, so for a basement we usually start with the moisture and talk through basement flooring options before stain is even on the table.

What to know about stained concrete flooring in El Paso

Stain work makes rinse water, and El Paso Water issues dewatering permits that may be required when a project sends wastewater into the stormwater system, and that includes the street. Whether your job needs one isn't settled until we know where the water goes, so we check with the office that covers your address before we start, and if a permit is needed, we handle the paperwork. If you'd rather act as your own general contractor on the home you live in or plan to live in, the city lets you apply for a building permit yourself, and we'll walk you through it.

On jobs around El Paso we see a lot of slabs coming out from under carpet or tile, and the glue left behind decides how much prep the floor needs before stain will take. We run into the same leftovers on jobs in Horizon City and Socorro. We're based in El Paso and work across the city and the cities around it in Texas and New Mexico, so if yours isn't on our list, call and ask.

Why call us for stained concrete

  • I check the prep myself

I come out to look at your floor and write the estimate, and our own crew does the work. I'm on the job to check the prep before any stain goes down, because that's the part you can't see once the color is on.

  • Figuring out odd slabs since 2017

We've been in business since 2017, and we're the crew people call for peeling floors and old coatings nobody can name. If your slab has something strange on it, we'd rather figure it out than guess and hope.

  • Licensed, insured and easy to check

We're fully licensed and insured. The City of El Paso has contractors file its application every year to be eligible for city permits, so ask any crew you're comparing, us included, whether that filing is current.

Stain only looks as good as the slab under it lets it. When you reach out, have the floor's age, its rough square footage and anything that's on it now ready, and we'll take it from there.

Frequently asked questions

How much does stained concrete flooring cost in El Paso?

Applying decorative concrete stain usually costs about $5.50 to $6 per square foot across the US. That's the going rate for the stain work itself, not our quote, and old coatings to strip, cracks to repair and the sealer you pick can all move your floor's number. I'll give you your own figure after I've seen the slab.

Will acid stain hide cracks and old stains on my concrete floor?

No, acid stain won't hide imperfections or stains already in the concrete, because it colors the slab through a reaction instead of covering it. Older, worn concrete may show little or no reaction at all, so how your floor looks now shapes how it'll look stained. If hiding damage is the goal, a resurfacing overlay is usually the better fit.

How do I choose a stain color for my concrete floor?

Choose it from a test area on your actual floor, because the color in the bottle changes once the stain dries and reacts with your concrete. Each slab's texture and makeup shapes the color and the mottling, so two floors with the same stain rarely look alike.

Does stained concrete need to be sealed?

Yes. One stain maker's guide says acid-stained concrete must be sealed, and that epoxy or solvent-based sealers give the color a deeper look than water-based ones. That makes the sealer a looks decision as much as a protective one, so pick it by how deep and brilliant you want the color.

How long does stained concrete last compared to paint?

By one stain maker's account, chemically stained concrete holds its color and resists wear better than acrylic paints or stains, and it doesn't weather off quickly. The color comes from a reaction in the concrete instead of a film that can peel, though the sealer over it still wears with use.

How do I maintain a stained concrete floor?

Look over the sealed surface now and then for spots where traffic has thinned or worn the sealer, and reseal as needed. Doorways and busy walkways usually show it first, and concrete sealing on those spots keeps the color protected.

  • Terrazzo Flooring

When your concrete is too patched or worn for stain to look good, terrazzo gives you a poured floor with stone or glass chips and a pattern you choose.

  • Basement Flooring

A basement slab often fights moisture from below, so we look at what's coming up through the concrete and recommend a floor that suits those conditions.
