Is epoxy the right coating for my concrete floor?

Epoxy floor coatings in El Paso, TX put a hard, sealed layer over a concrete garage, shop or basement floor, so it stops dusting, holds up to oil and spills, and wipes clean once it's fully cured. The wait before you can use the floor again depends mostly on which coating you choose.

Most people call when a garage, shop or basement floor is stained, dusting or shedding an old coating, and they want to know what it'll cost and how long they'll be without the space. The price mostly moves with the size of the floor, what the slab needs first, like cracks to fill or an old coating to grind off, and whether you go with plain epoxy, a sun resistant topcoat or a polyaspartic floor coating. The schedule turns on the prep, the weather on install day and how soon you need to use the floor again, and the estimate I write after looking at your floor gives you your own figure.

How we install an epoxy floor coating

On most epoxy jobs the big questions are how much sun hits the floor and how soon you need the space back, so that's where I start when I look at your slab. I also check what you can't see yet, like damp coming up through the concrete, hairline cracks or an old coating that has to come off, because that's where most peeling floors start, and if the slab isn't ready, I'll tell you. Before anything gets mixed, we talk through plain epoxy and a sun resistant topcoat side by side, what each one asks of you in cost and in waiting, and you choose. Then our crew preps the concrete so the coating has a clean, rough surface to grab, and once the prep passes, we fill the cracks, lay down the coats and leave the floor to cure.

If the floor is in a garage, our garage floor coatings page goes into parking, tires and that door left open all afternoon. For a shop, warehouse or other working space, commercial and industrial epoxy floor coatings are built heavier and scheduled around the hours you can close.

Epoxy floor coatings in El Paso and the cities around it

In El Paso, building permits go through the city's One Stop Shop, and a permit is required to build, enlarge, alter, repair, move or demolish a building or to change how it's used. That list is written for building work in general, so I won't assume either way whether a coating job on its own needs one, and the One Stop Shop is the place to ask. Rules change from one city and county to the next, so we check with the office that covers your address before we start, and if your job needs a permit, we handle the paperwork or walk you through it if you're filing as the owner.

Most of the floors we're called to around El Paso are attached garages and shop slabs, and plenty already carry an old coating that's lifting where the tires sit. We see the same kinds of slabs on jobs in Horizon City and Sunland Park, and we work across El Paso and the cities around it in Texas and New Mexico, so if your city isn't on our list, call and ask.

Why call us for epoxy floors

  • I look at your floor myself

I come out to look at the floor and write the estimate, then our own crew does the work and I'm on the job to check the prep before anything goes down. That matters because the slab and the prep under the finish decide whether a coating stays put.

  • Odd slabs since 2017

We've been in business since 2017, and a lot of our calls are peeling garage floors, damp basements and old coatings nobody can name. If yours is one of those, I'd rather spend the extra time working out why than guess and hope.

  • Licensed and insured, ask to see it

We're fully licensed and insured. Ask any installer you're comparing to show you before work starts, so you know the people on your property are covered.

  • Your actual floor, measured

El Paso cost figures treat a 2-car garage as 500 square feet, but plenty of garages run bigger or smaller, so I measure yours on site. Prices here run by the square foot, so that measurement is what your estimate is built on.

Frequently asked questions

How much does epoxy floor coating cost in El Paso?

Epoxy floor coating in El Paso usually costs about $4 to $7 per square foot, and that includes the materials, the floor prep and the application. It's the going rate around town for garage floors, basement floors and general floor coatings alike, not our own price, and the estimate gives you your own figure once I've seen the slab.

How long does an epoxy floor take to cure before I can walk or park on it?

One comparison guide puts water-based epoxy at 24 hours or more before you walk on it, 72 hours before you park on it and 7 days to a full cure. By the same guide, most polyaspartic systems take light foot traffic in 1 to 3 hours and fully cure within 24 hours, so polyaspartic is worth weighing if you need the garage back fast.

Will an epoxy garage floor turn yellow in the sun?

Plain epoxy can, because unprotected epoxy yellows and chalks in sunlight, and the same comparison guide says garages with windows or open doors often show a yellow cast within 2 to 4 years. A UV-stable, sunlight-resistant polyurethane or polyaspartic topcoat blocks that, so if your garage gets sun, plan the topcoat into the job when we go over the side by side.

Is an epoxy floor slippery?

It can be, since a smooth epoxy coating gives your shoes little to grip. Granular material can be added to the finish to make it less slick, so ask for that grit if you want better footing in a garage, shop or entry.

What temperature does concrete need to be for an epoxy coating?

One epoxy maker's instructions set a minimum floor surface temperature of 50°F and call for coating only when the floor is above the dew point, the temperature where moisture starts to form on it. That's the concrete itself, not the air, so a cold stretch can push a start date back. At the other end, the comparison guide notes that above 90°F epoxy sets faster and leaves less working time before it gets too thick to spread, so ask any installer how they plan a very hot day.

How do I know an epoxy installer will prep my floor the right way?

Ask them how they'll prep it, because one epoxy maker's instructions call surface prep critical and direct mechanical prep of the concrete by grinding or shot blasting, which roughens the surface with small steel beads. An installer who plans to just clean the floor and roll coating on is skipping the step that keeps it stuck down, and it's a fair question for anyone you're comparing, us included.

  • Garage Floor Coatings

For a garage that's stained, cracked or peeling, this covers coatings picked for car traffic, a door that's open half the day and how soon you need to park.

  • Commercial & Industrial Epoxy Floor Coatings

Shops, warehouses and kitchens put forklifts, chemicals and constant foot traffic on a floor, so this covers coatings and scheduling built for a space that can't close for long.
